# Summary: ALA) is a naturally-occurring fatty acid made by your body. Its primary role is to convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy using oxygen, known as aerobic metabolism. ALA can be found in certain foods and supplements. There is some evidence that ALA may have anti-cancer properties and may be beneficial in cancer treatment and prevention. One way ALA may be beneficial is by helping to neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals, which can damage cells and contribute to the development of cancer. ALA may also have anti-inflammatory properties and may help to suppress the growth of cancer cells. Some studies have also suggested that ALA may enhance the effectiveness of certain cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It is thought that ALA may help to protect healthy cells from the damaging effects of these treatments while making cancer cells more sensitive to the therapy. Additionally, animal studies showed that ALA has been found to inhibit the growth and progression of certain types of cancer such as prostate, breast and liver cancer, however, more research is needed to confirm these findings. # Additional information: ALA is also used as adjuvant therapy for neuropathy and to improve glycemic control. Preclinical studies show that ALA plays a crucial role in energy production, and exerts antioxidant and apoptotic effects [(1)](https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/alpha-lipoic-acid#references-1) [(2)](https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/alpha-lipoic-acid#references-2) [(3)](https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/alpha-lipoic-acid#references-3).
